Covid-19 Test Q&A

What is a COVID-19 test?

A COVID-19 test is a diagnostic test for the illness that comes from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The virus is highly contagious and can spread to others even if you don’t realize you have it yourself. It primarily spreads through water droplets in the air.

If you’re not sure which type of COVID-19 test to get, your provider at Triad Primary Care can help you weigh your options or direct you to the choice that best suits your needs.

As soon as your results become available, your provider goes over them with you and lets you know if there are any other steps you need to take. If your results indicate a current active infection, you need to self-isolate for at least five days or whatever length of time your provider advises.

When should I get a COVID-19 test?

There are several reasons why you may need a COVID-19 test. Maybe a person or organization requires it of you, or maybe you’re choosing to get one on your own. You can get a COVID-19 test any time that’s convenient for you with walk-in services at Triad Primary Care.

You should consider coming in for a COVID-19 test if you:

  • Just traveled or are planning to travel
  • Plan on congregating in a large group (e.g., school, work meetings)
  • Know you had close contact with someone who has the illness
  • Are asked by a health care professional or public health organization
  • Develop symptoms of COVID-19

Not every infection with COVID-19 causes symptoms, but you should be aware of the general list of symptoms it can cause — get tested right away if you experience shortness of breath, fever, chills, cough, or a loss of taste and smell.

What are the different types of COVID-19 tests?

Triad Primary Care offers COVID-19 tests that can detect current infections of the virus. You can get:

Rapid COVID-19 test

The rapid COVID-19 test is an antigen test that detects the presence of the virus SARS-CoV-2. Your results are available within minutes.

PCR COVID-19 test

You can get a PCR lab test to detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus that takes a day or two for results and may be more accurate than an antigen test.

If you think you had COVID-19, Triad Primary Care may recommend an antibody test to detect antibodies to SARS-CoV-2.

To find out more about COVID-19 testing or get a test, call Triad Primary Care or book an appointment online. You may also walk in for a test at your convenience.
